Normandy Markets

There are markets of varying type in Normandy, most towns have at least one market day. All worth visiting, although we compiled a list of those that are better established. Still check with tourist offices and ask locally, the list be no means exhaustive:

  • Monday - Langrune, Pont-d'Ouilly, Pont l'Evêque, Vierville-sur-Mer.
  • Tuesday - Balleroy, Caen, Courseuilles, Deauville, Dozulé, Grandcamp-Maisy, Ouistreham, Thury-Harcourt, Vassy, Villers-sur-Mer.
  • Wednesday - Bayeux, Bernières, Cabourg, Caen, Honfleur (organic market) Isigny, Lisieux, Potigny, Trouville and Villers-Bocage.
  • Thursday - Argence, Le Bény-Bocage, Douvres, Houlgate, Livarot, Saint-Aubin.
  • Friday - Caen, Cambremer, Colombelles (afternoon market) Deauville, Falaise, Ouistreham, Saint-Julien-le-Faucon, Villers-sur-Mer, Vire.
  • Saturday - Aunay-sur-Odon, Bayeux, Caen, Dives-sur-Mer, Grandcamps-Maisy, Honfleur, Isigny, Lisieux, Ouistreham, Touques, Verson.
  • Sunday - Cabourg, Caen, Port-en-Bessin, Trouville.

Trouville is quite local and well worth seeing on Wednesday or Sunday. Honfleur not much further away, with fresh fish for sale on Honfleur quayside, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. Saturday is a good day with the main produce market also on in the town. The markets in our list tend to run throughout the year, although seasonal venues such as Blonville, Longrune and Orbec are equally good value.

A Few Other Diversions

We hope you enjoy all the markets you visit, which are often a good stop on your way to other places. You can see suggestions on our guide to Calvados or the Normandy resources page, although you will probably have many other ideas in mind, Normandy is such a rich and varied region.

Even so, your market visit may not be so planned, part of a relaxing holiday. A chance to see other local sights, such as elegant racehorses exercising on the beach as in the slideshow, or an early dip in one of the good local pools, or the sea itself. The book you just bought may be a good companion at a friendly cafe.

The château itself a fine place to return with produce fresh from a local stall, no trouble to pop out for breakfast, or find the ingredients for a dinner to remember. If we can help with suggestions on how best to see Normandy markets, or any further information, please feel free to contact us at any time.
