The Château and The Web

Girl using laptop on holiday

The web, email, messaging, social networks, an integral part of life for many. When holiday time comes what should they do. In our world of growing technology you may think the answer is stay connected but not everyone agrees.

Many of our guests say that 24/7 internet access at the château is not what they want, for themselves or others in the party. Their objective in choosing a château holiday was to spend time in a different way, family and friends together in the real world.

An Internet Compromise

We have heard of guests who religiously packed their laptop but decided to leave that packed once they arrived, much else to fill the mind in Normandy and at our holiday château. Even so some need to be connected and others rightly want to make sure options are available:

  • Check with the provider of current contracts you have, for a phone or 3G dongle. The price of overseas use can be high if you get carried away but charges have come down recently and for occasional use, this may be the best option.
  • If you intend more regular use, a French Pay As You Go 3G dongle and a laptop are a good combination. Orange offer coverage along the coast and inland spots, including the chateau area. Details are on the Orange website, they have a shop at: 32 Rue Désiré Le Hoc in Deauville who you can call on 0800 830800. If you prefer there is an Orange helpline in English on 09 69 36 39 00.
  • No need to pay if you are out and about. A growing number of public venues offer free wifi and if you, or anyone in your party is a BT broadband client, make sure you sign up for BT Fon. There are free apps available to help you find hotspots or Fonspots, a few of which are pleasant watering holes.
  • An equally decent place to pop in is the internet cafe, Le Deauvillais, opposite Deaville station, free use for customers. The same applies in many restaurants and hotels, or you can get a free ticket for the town wifi network at the Tourist Board.

There are plenty of other options in all the main towns and a few even in the tiniest of villages. So no member of your party needs to be deprived, they may well add to your château holiday with useful information. We hope you all enjoy your stay.
